The Face-à-Face exhibition offers an unprecedented dialogue between two collections. It establishes resonances between the works created by major figures of the modern avant-gardes in Germany and France and those of contemporary artists from various parts of the world. The questions of metamorphosis, transformation of matter, optical phenomenon or perception of space articulate the presentation of the East Gallery. They reflect the diversity of formal experimentation and also reflect the artists' desire to question the social and political structures of societies.

In Europe, the artistic effervescence of the 1920s was marked by collective adventures. Artists like Lyonel Feininger or László Moholy-Nagy participate in the innovative current of the Bauhaus, founded in 1919 in Weimar, Germany, which aims to bring together art, architecture and applied arts. Their research, focusing on the simplification and fragmentation of figurative or abstract geometric patterns, resonates with the photographic experiments of Albert Renger-Patzsch, associated with the New Objectivity movement, active in Germany between 1918 and 1933. Their achievements around the perception of space and its explosion is reminiscent today of the work of Lee Bul or Alicja Kwade.

The treatment of the forest in its spiritual dimension by Emily Bates or the dreamlike landscapes of Germaine Hoffmann find a distant echo in Surrealism, of which Hans Bellmer and Max Ernst are emblematic figures. Although the movement went far beyond the borders of Europe, it originated in France, notably with the publication of the Manifeste du surréalisme by André Breton in 1924.
