July's book is "Roadside Picnic," a philosophical Soviet-era science fiction novel that served as the inspiration for the classic film "Stalker" directed by Andrei Tarkovsky. Set in a world grappling with an extraterrestrial event, six 'zones' exhibit strange and dangerous phenomena and contain artifacts with inexplicable properties. Although tightly controlled by governments, 'stalkers' venture into these zones illegally to retrieve the artifacts for profit. The novel follows one of these stalkers over an eight-year period.
