Purcell and Blow, great friends and influential composers, made their mark on the history of baroque music. Blow, composer and organist at the Royal Chapel, was Purcell's mentor and inspired his masterpiece Dido and Aeneas. Purcell, referred to by musicologist Charles Burney as "our musical Shakespeare," left an impressive body of work despite his premature death at 36. Both were commissioned by the London Musical Society to compose odes honoring Saint Cecilia, the patroness of musicians in England during the 17th century. "Begin the Song!",
