Once the infernal race of the enchanted brooms is halted by the master sorcerer, the organ takes center stage. It first performs solo in Poulenc's Concerto, a tribute to Bach where the author appears more as a "monk" than a "rogue," as the famous musicologist Claude Rostand phrased it. Then it blends into Saint-Saëns' orchestra, not without its moments of glory: while it unfolds softly and poetically in the slow movement, its commanding C major chord at the beginning of the finale and the grand chorale that soon follows restore its majesty.
