In Subito con forza, Unsuk Chin pays homage to Beethoven for the 250th anniversary of his birth by incorporating several of his characteristic motifs. Composed for Paris, the "Oxford" Symphony demonstrates Haydn's international renown; it is indeed the work he is said to have conducted when he received an honorary doctorate from the illustrious English university. Born during the years when Dvořák directed the New York Conservatory, the Cello Concerto expresses his nostalgia for Bohemia, its landscapes, and its folklore, and includes a tribute to his beloved sister-in-law Josefína, who had recently passed away.
