In Subito con forza, Unsuk Chin pays tribute to Beethoven for the 250th anniversary of his birth, borrowing several characteristic motifs. Composed for Paris, the Symphony « Oxford » reflects Haydn's international fame; it is indeed the work he is said to have conducted when he received an honorary doctorate from the distinguished English university. Written during the period when Dvořák directed the New York Conservatory, the Cello Concerto expresses his nostalgia for Bohemia, its landscapes, and folklore, and includes a homage to his beloved sister-in-law Josefína, who had just passed away.
