History
The 19th-century sovereigns left their mark on the army and society. King-Grand Duke William I of Nassau ruled Luxembourg under a personal union. The outbreak of the Belgian revolution in 1830 marked the end of his reign. His son, William II, a hero of Waterloo, organized the Luxembourgian federal contingent. In the spring following the revolution of 1848, he succumbed to a severe illness. His son, William III, held power for four decades and guided the Grand Duchy towards neutrality during the 1867 Luxembourg crisis. Upon his death in 1890, without male heirs, Adolphe of Nassau-Weilburg provided the country not only with a new military commander-in-chief but also a new dynasty.
