Theatre - Michelle, should we blame you for taking a selfie at Auschwitz?
A play by Sylvain Levey inspired by a true story
In 2014, a photo caused a scandal on the internet: it was a selfie posted on social media of a young girl posing with a smile at Auschwitz. Who is Michelle? Or rather, who is uneviedechat? A carefree teenager or a badly behaved one? Here we see the clash of two worlds: that of the “old,” who watch the landscape go by, and that of the young, quick to capture it with their fully equipped and ultra-connected smartphones. Kim, Angèle, Michelle, Sélim, and Abel belong to this new world. And it is the old world they come to visit when they go to Auschwitz to discover the horror of the concentration camps, this harsh and cold memory, which, however, will not withstand Michelle's smile and the click of her camera...
Did she fulfill her duty to remember by taking this selfie? Did she sully the past by posing in front of the remains of the Holocaust? Opinions differ on social media, comments fly, and the web closes in on Michelle, a virtual prisoner of cruel digital harassment.
With this ensemble piece inspired by a real-life event, Sylvain Levey leaves us free to exercise our gaze—and our judgment—on this society of appearances that we have built. Thanks to a dramaturgy that plays on the immediacy of the Internet, he dismantles the mechanism of virtual frenzy, which borders on harassment.
