Synopsis
Created in 1841 at the Académie Royale de Musique – the forerunner of the Paris Opera – this ballet by Jules Perrot and Jean Coralli, here adapted by Patrice Bart and Eugène Polyakov, opened a new aesthetic in the history of Western dance. Pointe shoes, arabesques, and long white tutus help to evoke a fantastical and diaphanous universe, which has become the very embodiment of Romanticism.
The story:
The charming peasant girl Giselle loves Albrecht, who, beneath his villager clothes, turns out to be a duke. When she discovers that he cannot marry her because he is already engaged, Giselle descends into madness and dies. She is then taken in by the vengeful Wilis, the souls of young girls abandoned by an unfaithful lover. Will Giselle choose to punish or forgive?
