Art History Conference: "Edgar Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec: The Little Paris of the Lower Quarters"
The Jacques Brel Center presents the conference "Edgar Degas et Toulouse-Lautrec: Le petit Paris des bas -quartiers" as part of the exhibition "Dans la rue". The conference is hosted by Catherine Koenig, a national lecturer. Edgar Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec, artists of aristocratic origins, wandered through the streets, the stairways of Montmartre, the laundresses' shops, the cabarets, the fairground stalls. They observed the commoners of Paris, the dancers, the prostitutes, the laundresses, the comedians... They are sharp-eyed observers who analyze the body in motion with great formal rigor while drawing influence from the Japanese prints of Hokusai and Hiroshige. They depicted, in sinuous lines marked with fatty chalk, the sufferings, silences, solitude, and misery of the City of Light. A journey into the hidden face of the tiny Paris of the Belle Époque.
