Originally a play by Victorien Sardou, "Tosca" became one of Giacomo Puccini's most famous operas upon its creation in 1900, symbolizing lyrical art itself. At the height of his maturity, the composer delivers a masterful score where tension arises from the very first chords. In a production dominated by a massive cross, Pierre Audi highlights the relentless grip of the Church, which, through its complicity with power, crushes the characters' destinies.
The story:
Tosca suspects her lover Caravadossi of having an affair with another woman. In reality, the painter is sheltering a fugitive prisoner from the clutches of the Chief of Police, Baron Scarpia. When Caravadossi's complicity is confirmed, Scarpia makes a vile blackmail demand upon Tosca for his advantages.
