May 1866 in Venice. A demonstration of Italian patriots at the Fenice Theatre disrupts the third act of Verdi's Il Trovatore. An Austrian officer, Franz Mahler, is challenged by Roberto Ussoni in a duel. Despite being protected by his cousin, Countess Livia Serpieri, Ussoni is arrested and exiled. While attempting to intercede with Mahler, Livia passionately falls for him, to the point of abandoning her patriotic beliefs, her family, and her friends. Mahler, however captivating, is a cowardly manipulator.
