Three years after Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in Rouen, a woman who eerily resembles her appears near Metz. A few weeks later, Joan's brothers visit this woman and confirm that she is indeed their sister. The Inquisition seems to have executed the false Joan of Arc. Joan marries the knight of Ambroisier in Arlon and involves herself in the elections of the prince-electors of the Holy Roman Empire. Quickly, several inquisitors focus on her and want to question her. Joan of Ambroisier finds refuge with the Duchess of Luxembourg and spends much time at the rock of Bock, until King Charles IV of France eventually wishes to meet her. The character of Joan of Ambroisier is almost as legendary as the real Joan of Arc. Her life is adventurous and full of anecdotes. Rafael Kohn examines current social structures through this historical character. The power social structures, family structures, and gender structures are challenged through the prism of the false Joan of Arc. Far from the myth of Saint Joan of Arc, Claude d'Ambroisier is not a virgin but a mother of two and the wife of the knight Ambroisier. Nonetheless, she dresses in male attire and involves herself in the political matters of her time. She can be seen as a pioneer of the feminist movement. She knew how to ride a horse and wield a sword, leaving her children under her husband's care while she mingled with high nobility, involved herself in political affairs, and traveled across Germany and France.
