The Trial of Joan - Theatre
After Andromaque (22 • 23), Yves Beaunesne returns to the Théâtres de la Ville with Le Procès de Jeanne. He reunites with actress and singer Judith Chemla, as well as composer Camille Rocailleux, with whom he presented L'Annonce faite à Marie at the Grand Théâtre in 2014. From a libretto written by Marion Bernède, based on the transcription of the minutes of Joan of Arc's trial, recreating the language and style of the time, Yves Beaunesne composes a kind of oratorio, centered on the figure of the Maid of Orléans, accompanied on stage by six instrumentalists and choristers, as well as by videos by Pierre Nouvel that bring to life the other characters of this famous trial.
The director transforms this historical document into a political and theatrical lesson, where a young woman, alone in the dock, thwarts the accusations of church and law officials who attempt to discredit her as a heretic and witch in order to thwart her growing political influence. Six centuries after her death at the stake, Joan of Arc, a passionate, mystical, contradictory, and elusive figure, continues to fascinate audiences and provoke controversy.
In a true tour de force, Yves Beaunesne presents a show, invented and built for and with Judith Chemla, which blends history, music, theatre, cinema and spiritual experience.
