The painting of Alexis Nivelle explores the associations and ambiguities of the imaginative life using a limited repertoire of simple, seemingly abstract forms. All these forms share a family resemblance and seem to imitate bubbles, balls of yarn, sausages, suns, clouds, or perhaps flowers... The cliché is never far away, nor are idiocy and humor. And also (why not?) tenderness.
As a draftsman, his work is self-referential and most often proceeds by mise en abîme.
In the interiors and architectures I draw, emptied of all human presence, seemingly abstract paintings are staged. Whereas real paintings strive to affirm a luminous and storyless presence, their doubles in the drawings inhabit the suspended time of a narrative always waiting to happen.
