The monarchs of the 19th century left a significant mark on the army and society. King-Grand Duke William I of Nassau ruled Luxembourg in the context of a personal union. The outbreak of the Belgian Revolution in 1830 marked the end of his reign. His son William II, hero of Waterloo, established the Luxembourg federal contingent. In the spring following the 1848 revolution, he succumbed to a serious illness. His son William III ruled for four decades and steered the Grand Duchy toward neutrality during the Luxembourg Crisis of 1867. Upon his death in 1890, without male heirs, Adolphe of Nassau-Weilburg provided not only a new commander-in-chief for the army but also a new dynasty for the country.
