Balladur is no longer the wild pop outburst born from the French noise scene that stunned everyone in the mid-2010s: the duo has traveled, played in all the venues across the country, explored every backroad in their 205, for better and for worse. While these two rebels still speak the language of beautiful songs and global inspirations, their latest album is the doomiest we’ve ever heard from them. The 9 tracks of "Pourquoi certains arbres sont si grands" are haunted by nostalgia, lost hopes, happier days, and a uniquely nihilistic sense. Is it a 70s Italian passion? The intense, direct lyrics? Their obsession with chiaroscuro? The demonic synths running through the background? Interestingly, Balladur first emerged as a Cold Wave band in 2013, and now, 10 years later, after shaking off all pre-made labels, they deliver their hardest, most intense, and haunting record.
