Two rooms are dedicated to the Japanese artist Takako Saito (1929, Japan - 2025, Germany), whose works were recently acquired by FRAC Lorraine. Takako Saito is closely associated with Fluxus. During her psychology studies in Tokyo in the late 1940s, she joined the Creative Art Education movement, founded by Teijiro Kubo, advocating free expression and play. Living in New York from 1963 to 1968, where she discovered Fluxus through the artist Ay-O, she then collaborated with the movement after meeting George Maciunas, notably through ball and chess games (Fluxchess), and later with George Brecht and Robert Filliou. She published her first artist's book in England from 1973 with Beau Geste Press, before working for Francesco Conz editions from 1975 to 1979, when she settled permanently in Düsseldorf, Germany, teaching at the University of Essen. Saito, who saw no separation between life and art, put at the heart of her practice key elements: audience orientation, a deep interest in materials and processes, the joy of play, and above all, rooting her practice in daily life. Two weeks before the exhibition opening, Takako Saito passed away at the age of 96. This exhibition is the first following her passing: we honor her presence through the presentation of her work in Metz.
