Giuseppe Verdi's Messa da Requiem is one of the most powerful works in classical music. Composed as a tribute to his poet friend Alessandro Manzoni, this mass, premiered in Milan under the direction of the composer, is a dramatic masterpiece inspired by the Roman Catholic liturgy with a spectacular, almost operatic dimension.
