"Schëldref in the years 1950 – 1991": In the Schmadds' Pâsch in Schëldref stands the Ampeljong, an ancient walnut tree. Strange things happen in its shadow. Karel, known in the village as the little Schmadd, lets himself fall from the tree after a dare. He is lucky—nothing happens to him—but in his vision, a beautiful white woman catches him in a large, silvery coat. This woman accompanies him like a ghost through his dreams and everyday life. At seventeen, Karel falls from the tree again. This time, he becomes paralyzed and must find a new path in life. During a stormy night in 1988, lightning strikes the walnut tree.
