“Gone, but not forgotten: Saint-Victor Church in Metz, rue au Blé – an archaeological rediscovery” In 2025, a preventive archaeological excavation carried out in connection with the installation of a new underground bring bank, at the end of the cul-de-sac on rue au Blé, revealed the remains of the former Saint-Victor Church. Demolished in 1828 to allow for the completion of the present covered market, this church was one of Metz’s oldest religious buildings and dated back at least to the second half of the 8th century. The archaeological research provided a better understanding of the history and development of this building through the discovery of several construction phases. It also uncovered several burials inside the church. This presentation will revisit the main discoveries from the excavation and what they teach us about the history of this district of Metz.
