After three programs dedicated to folk music and its ties with art music in Ireland, Scotland, Sweden, and Norway, The Curious Bards now explore these strong connections within the work of one of the greatest English composers of the 17th century: Henry Purcell. Their journey through Purcell’s secular music reveals his deep familiarity with the popular music of his time. These influences show in his dance pieces for theater (incidental music) or opera, as well as in many songs marked by this popular touch, interpreted by guest mezzo-soprano Ilektra Platiopoulou. The Curious Bards thus offer a fresh perspective on Purcell, highlighting his popular genius beyond his well-known operas and semi-operas.
