Why do we dream?
Dreams have fascinated humanity since time immemorial. But what do we actually know about them today? Why do we dream, and what role do dreams play in our psychological experience? This course offers an accessible introduction to the psychology and neuroscience of dreaming. Together, we will examine the most important scientific theories about sleep and dreams, the various stages of sleep, the role of memory, and the possible functions of dreams according to the current state of research. In addition, the most significant historical approaches to dream interpretation will be presented, particularly the theories of Sigmund Freud and Carl Gustav Jung, in order to place their influence on the development of psychology in context. Using numerous examples and current research findings, the course provides a well-founded understanding of what dreams can reveal about the functioning of our brain and psyche, while clearly distinguishing scientific findings from hypotheses and personal beliefs.
