Storytelling performance by Corinne Duchêne Christian All Saints’ Day replaced the Celts’ Samhain, which later became the Irish Halloween. In the past, the Gauls celebrated Samhain over three nights and three days. Children in disguise chased away wandering spirits, candles on the windows guided departed ancestors, and young people went from door to door to collect food for the great banquet. In the French oral tradition, this is the time when fairies and goblins appear in the countryside, standing stones move, releasing their treasures, and white ladies haunt the ruins of fortresses.
