One of the most influential photojournalists of her time. A deeply moving and memorable first solo exhibition. In a place that is as impressive as ever.
This probably isn't the kind of outing you'd automatically put at the top of your list… But honestly, we can't help but recommend that you pay a visit to the National Museum of the Resistance and Human Rights in Esch to check out Lynsey Addario's Women in War exhibition 🎞️🪖 And good news: you have until December to add this visit to your calendar!
Since last year, the MNRDH has been presenting the Women in Conflict exhibition series, dedicated to women in times of war: those who resist, protect, and survive despite conflict. This powerful and necessary project invites us to view history and current events through perspectives that are often overlooked. With Women in War, the museum enters the final phase of this series. It is a particularly striking exhibition - and perhaps the perfect time to step inside this magnificent building if you haven’t already!

WOMEN IN WAR BY LYNSEY ADDARIO - A IMPRESSIVE PHOTO EXHIBITION
Created specifically for the Musée de la Résistance et des Droits Humains, the exhibition offers an immersive journey through more than twenty years of work by Lynsey Addario, the American photojournalist and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner 📷
Through a selection of photos taken in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, South Sudan, and more recently in Ukraine, the photographer shines a light on those about whom we hear too little: women, mothers, and children in those countries at war 👩🏾🦱🧕🏽👧🏻 The exhibition explores different facets of women’s lives in conflict zones: motherhood amid chaos, female combatants, and survivors of sexual violence. We found some of the photographs particularly hard to look at, yet so necessary for the simple reason that they amplify the power of the testimony!
At times, the exhibition offers a glimpse into these women’s private lives. The fact that the photographer is a woman herself creates a special connection and makes some of the photographs feel almost intimate - and all the more striking for it!
The different formats really give the visit a sense of rhythm! The large prints in the main hall grab you the moment you walk in. There’s also this collection of passports, press cards, and cameras: honestly, it’s impossible not to linger for a moment and take it all in 👀
Designed as an educational experience focused on human rights, the photos are accompanied by explanations (and even a small booklet with all the photo captions) that help you better understand the context. But if we had to give you one piece of advice: be sure to check the dates for the guided tours! They provide additional insight and help you better understand the stories behind the images.
📅 March 7 to December 20, 2026
🎫 €5 for adults - Free for those under 21, Kulturpass holders, student ID holders, ICOM cardholders, Frënn vum Resistenzmusée cardholders, and Luxembourg Card holders

WHAT DO WE DO AFTER THE TOUR?
As is often the case at the MNRDH, the experience continues after the visit Alongside Women in War, the museum offers a full program of events designed to spark discussion and encourage reflection far beyond the images themselves.
As we mentioned earlier, keep the guided tours in mind! To help you plan, here are the upcoming dates: April 18 in English, May 2 and June 13 in German, May 30 and June 27 in French.
For those who want to step behind the lens, many workshops are being organized this spring and summer:
📸 Photojournalism workshops to learn the basics of photojournalism on April 18, May 30, June 27, and July 25
📸 Portfolio Review sessions to discuss your own photographic work on August 15 and 22
The museum is also organizing a photojournalism contest inviting participants to document the daily lives of women in Luxembourg and the Greater Region. The selected photographs will then be featured in an outdoor exhibition in front of the museum 🌳
