During the Cold War, millions of young listeners across Eastern Europe secretly tuned their radios to a signal coming from Luxembourg. Broadcasting across borders and beyond political barriers, Radio Luxembourg brought Western music, voices and cultural influences to audiences living behind the Iron Curtain.

As part of the immersive sound experience Radio Luxembourg – Ghosts of the Villa at Villa Louvigny, this special event explores the unique relationship between Radio Luxembourg and its listeners in Poland – where the station became a powerful symbol of musical discovery, curiosity, rebellion and connection with the wider world.

For this special event, we are honoured to welcome Piotr Metz
, who will be joining us from Warsaw. Metz is one of Poland’s most respected music journalists and radio personalities. Born in Tarnów in 1957, he has spent decades shaping Polish radio culture, hosting influential music programmes and curating festivals, and has received the prestigious Gold Microphone Award from Polish Radio for his outstanding contribution to broadcasting.

Like many of his generation, Piotr Metz first encountered Radio Luxembourg as a young listener fascinated by the station’s powerful signal crossing borders and bringing Western music into Polish homes. In this conversation, he will share personal memories of discovering the station in the 1960s and 1970s, and reflect on the cultural impact Radio Luxembourg had on young listeners growing up in Poland during that time.

The conversation will be moderated by Hanna Siemaszko and will be followed by a short Q&A with the audience. The language of the talk will be English.

After the talk, guests are warmly invited to stay for a drink and some light food.

Visitors attending the event will also have the opportunity to discover the Radio Luxembourg immersive sound experience at Villa Louvigny at 17.15 (duration approx. 45 min). If you would like to join this visit, please indicate this when registering. Places are limited (15 spots, first come – first served).
