Cultural Battle!
Why the Left is losing it. How it can win it.
"We need a strong leader to make the courageous decisions that can save us." This is, according to the latest report from the Black, Yellow, Blues study, a widely shared sentiment in Belgium. 70% of Belgians aspire to governance without checks and balances. That's harsh! The ideas of participatory democracy and solidarity, however, no longer motivate many people.
The 2024 elections have highlighted that the frustrations of a majority of the population are not addressed by left-wing rhetoric. On the other hand, right-wing populist rhetoric has garnered massive support! Given the right's extremely harsh policies toward the working classes, who form the majority in number, this is a paradox.
Paradox? Only on the surface. The population dreams of an authoritarian leader rather than an ungrounded elite; this is something to be studied. Workers prefer the promise of a promotion to the responsibility of changing a system that oppresses them; this is understandable. The left is no longer convincing; this is understandable.
To understand the failure of left-wing discourse and "do better" starting tomorrow, it's Tuesday News on May 27, 2025. We will welcome Jérôme Van Ruychevelt Ebstein, political advisor at the Ceci N'est Pas Une Crise Foundation and author of the publication Why Left-Wing Narratives No Longer Reach the Working Classes? (Ceci N'est Pas Une Crise Foundation, April 2025).
