What is a Kirtan (or Mantra Circle)?
Definition of Kirtan: In India, devotional singing, usually performed in a group in the form of a call-and-response chant, or a mantra sung to a melody. It is a form of active meditation preceding a period of silence.
Kirtan singing is a deeply inspiring practice that opens the heart and reveals our true nature. It calms the mind, helps us release unwanted tension, and find inner freedom. We sing in Sanskrit, a language revealed by ancient sages as the language of the heart. There is profound wisdom in the vibration of these songs (Kirtan), and everyone has their own experience of Grace through the power of song.
One can reach a state of meditative depth, and feel peace and vibrant silence within, much like after a hatha yoga session.
This is a great way to experience the joy of group singing; the emphasis is on participation rather than performance. We sing together, and it's accessible to everyone!
The joy provided by concentrated singing, coupled with deep physical and mental relaxation, generates a high vibrational state, a peaceful and radiant presence, the feeling of being well rooted in oneself, as if it were self-evident. This extremely positive feeling permeates our unconscious, and pushes us to seek again this pleasant experience of being alive, at the heart of life itself.
Chanting mantras is one of the practices of Yoga
(which is not just the asanas!)
