Colonial clichés – Europeans and the 'Others' in cinema
During the era of colonialism and imperialism, Europe conceived representations of non-European societies as "noble savages" or "uncivilized wildfolk." Conversely, the so-called "white man" and "white woman" were attributed a "mission civilisatrice," serving as an ideological tool for colonial powers' practices of domination and exploitation.
This lecture explores how these colonial stereotypes have been perpetuated through cinema and examines how contemporary films confront this legacy by introducing new perspectives. Selected excerpts will illustrate these themes.
