The Wiltz Garden is the birthplace of COOPERATIONS and thus the starting point for its development. In 1983, the Wiltz Garden project was launched by a collective of English, Luxembourgish, and Austrian artists. Herbert Maly, the founder of COOPERATIONS, was part of this collective, which worked towards a new artistic model in public spaces with a social and inclusive approach.
With people with disabilities and the unemployed, but also with the help of local artisans and temporary volunteers, the artists of the collective created the Garden in the 1980s. This collective commitment finally gave birth to the organization COOPERATIONS in 1990. It has since provided an organizational basis and a legal framework for the numerous artistic and cultural activities that have developed around the Garden, but also for the development and maintenance of the Garden itself.
The drop in altitude of the former brewery basin, on which the garden was created, reaches a maximum of 18 meters. Arranged in terraces, the garden is a living work of art, composed of numerous streams, ponds, and various plants that bathe the local Hasselstein stone in different light depending on the season. But the vibrant character of this place comes not only from the natural elements, but also from the various events that bring it to life throughout the year. During the Night of the Lanterns, for example, the Garden transforms into an ocean of lights, animated by artistic performances. Concerts and theater performances held there during the summer months complete the offerings of this unique place. The Wiltz Garden is located on land belonging to the municipality of Wiltz and can be visited free of charge all year round.
