The Fête de la Musique was created in France in 1982 at the initiative of the Ministry of Culture, under the leadership of Jack Lang and Maurice Fleuret, with the aim of bringing the millions of French people who practice music, both amateurs and professionals, into the streets.
Thionville quickly embraced this national event, transforming it into a popular and unifying local event. From the very beginning, the city embraced the spirit of the festival: free admission, musical diversity, and accessibility for all. The city strives to preserve the original spirit of 1982, emphasizing conviviality, spontaneity, and the participation of all.
In 2025, the programming continues to revolve around multiple stages and local bands, with concerts starting in the late afternoon and lasting until midnight.
Thus, for more than 40 years, the Fête de la Musique in Thionville has been part of the national tradition while cultivating its own identity: musical diversity, accessibility, promotion of local talent and a friendly atmosphere. It remains a highlight of the Thionville cultural calendar, faithful to the spirit of 1982
