Whether it’s depicting the waves lapping and striking the Scottish island of Staffa or the colorful works of Mussorgsky, dressed in the sumptuous orchestration provided by Ravel, the orchestra here demonstrates its evocative power. Additionally, it takes us into the vigorous ragtime rhythms of Florence Price, a contemporary of George Gershwin who was overlooked in her lifetime because she was Black and a woman. Jeneba Kanneh-Mason, the fifth-born of an incredible musical family, has championed this concerto that earned her triumphant debut at the BBC Proms in London.
