Did you think you knew all the melodies of Carmen by heart? The ballet by Rodion Shchedrin, written for his wife, the star dancer Maïa Plissetskaïa, is likely to challenge those beliefs. The composer imprints his touch on the main movements of the opera, similar to how Marcel Duchamp added a mustache to the Mona Lisa. Playful here, dramatic or poignant there, Shchedrin compensates for the lack of vocals with an incredibly inventive orchestra. A luminous and lyrical work, Prokofiev's First Concerto also weaves connections between France and Russia, as it was premiered in Paris, where Prokofiev lived in exile.
