USSR, 1966: The Soviet government commissioned Sergei Parajanov to produce a film about the life of Sayat Nova, an 18th-century Armenian poet. To the authorities' chagrin, the director delivered a surrealist film composed of splendid allegorical tableaux, a vibrant homage to the culture of the Caucasus. Jonathan Seilman envisioned an actual ceremony to pay homage: a light creation akin to stage arts, quadriphonic soundscaping, music devised from a varied instrumental setup (notably analog and modular keyboards) played alongside the film's sound, and Anne Careil as the officiant of this unique poetic parade.
