Kant, Kitsch and Coco Chanel - conference and debate
"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder," goes a well-known saying. The most famous representative of German criticism, Immanuel Kant, knows how to explain that this is so - and yet not so. Of course, it always depends on how we, as observers, perceive an object or nature in order to contemplate it aesthetically.
However, “pure beauty” is not about personal preferences or interests. This evening invites you into Kant’s world, in which the experience of beauty represents a mediation between our organic sense and our spiritual freedom. This phenomenon occurs much more clearly in an even more intense experience: In the moment when we feel overwhelmed by the majesty of nature – and yet strengthened at the same time. Who has not felt magically drawn to a majestic mountain backdrop?
However, if aesthetics are of interest, if it concerns the banal, flashy object or the luxurious car, then we distance ourselves very far from Kant's pure pleasure, and find ourselves in the world of kitsch and Coco Chanel!
