The Messa da Requiem is one of the most powerful works of classical music. In his prime and following the success of Aida, Verdi composed this mass in homage to his poet friend Alessandro Manzoni, whose death in 1873 profoundly affected him. The work was presented in Milan a year later, conducted by the composer himself, to great acclaim. This requiem follows the structure characteristic of the Roman Catholic liturgy, imbued with almost operatic dramatic quality. Owing to its power and spectacular nature, it stands out as an absolute masterpiece.
