Gradually, Japan reveals itself to a few initiates who discover it through adventurers and collectors bringing prints and objects to the West, as well as numerous photographs and paintings. Artifacts from the Land of the Rising Sun incite unprecedented enthusiasm among European and American bourgeois circles, giving rise to immense collections. Japanese art, almost unknown, dramatically impacts artistic circles. Impressionists and Nabis are fascinated by the asymmetry of compositions, flat areas of colors, black-outlined shapes, and traditional motifs. This fascination becomes apparent in the Meiji era as Japan opens its doors to the West. The exhibition explores this reciprocal discovery, notably highlighting decorative arts influenced by Japonism.
