The exhibition 'Soft Power: The Brussels Way of Making the City' traces Belgium's journey to becoming an internationally renowned hotspot for contemporary architecture and urban planning. The show highlights the framework conditions that have fostered a high-quality building culture in Brussels and encouraged a new generation of architects to take part in its urban development. The Bouwmeester Maître Architecte (BMA), founded in 2009, has made a major contribution, despite having only an advisory role. The BMA has developed a series of tools to support stakeholders throughout the project process, from inception to realization. Competitions are its key instrument, opening markets transparently and contributing to the quality of projects and, ultimately, the city. The non-anonymized and internationally announced 'calls' are conceived as a hybrid between open and invited competitions.
