A Sunday, A Work - Meet around the major works of the exhibitions
By Deborah Laks, art historian

Louise Nevelson unifies her materials under a layer of paint, so that the shapes appear mainly by their outlines. As one moves around, irregularities appear on the assembled pieces of wood: textures and bumps suggest their previous lives. The origin and use remain present under the paint, which nevertheless tempers the multitude of information contained in these traces of the past. In the work, something else happens, a harmony that is much more than the sum of its parts, a coherence nourished by apparently infinite variations. Together, we will look at how Louise Nevelson conducts the recovered material, like a conductor with her orchestra, maintaining the specific timbres of each element while bringing out a clear symphonic line that we will try to grasp and understand.
