For the first presentation of her work in France, 49 Nord 6 Est exhibits the works of Beverly Buchanan (1940-2015) in dialogue with the practice of Hélène Yamba-Guimbi (1995, France). Born in North Carolina, Beverly Buchanan's work is anchored in the popular culture of the southern United States, where she grew up, particularly exploring the history of slavery through monuments placed at the edge of visibility in the landscape. Her sculptures and drawings reflect her attachment to traditional folk constructions, restoring their vulnerability and the tenacity that made them exist. Beverly Buchanan creates fragments of space, evoking the fragility of living conditions within the African-American community in the southern United States. Hélène Yamba-Guimbi, through punctual interventions in the exhibition spaces, invites visitors to consider the physical dimension of art, questioning the notion of effort and breath.
