Catharina Margaretha Linck, also known as Anastasius Lagrantinus Rosenstengel, was the last person perceived as a woman to be executed in Europe for sodomy. Born in 1687, Linck lived a life transitioning between genders under constant suspicion and observation, for a time as a man in the army, later even married, only to ultimately be condemned to death as a woman for sodomy.

Linck's life story, which resembles a picaresque novel, has been adapted for the stage by the author duo Matter*Verse. Alias Anastasius approaches the historical figure in a light, playful tone, bringing both adversaries and companions to life in fleeting glimpses, while also giving space to the hardship and loneliness that Anastasius must have felt – in the constant turmoil between the sexes, driven by hunger and fear.

The production by up-and-coming director Fritzi Wartenberg marks the start of the Berliner Ensemble's return to the Théâtres de la Ville. Luxembourgish actor Max Gindorff is also part of the cast. After engagements at the Munich Residenztheater and the Burgtheater in Vienna, Gindorff has been a member of the Berliner Ensemble since the 2023/24 season, where he received the Helene Weigel Theatre Prize in 2024.
