Pretzel Sunday (Pretzel Sunday)
Pretzel Sunday (Luxembourg: Bretzelsonndeg) is a festival of love celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent. According to tradition, a man gives his sweetheart a pretzel (a pastry specialty made of flaky dough with a sugar glaze and almonds) as a token of his love. If the feelings are reciprocated, the woman gives him an egg on Easter Sunday. If she is not interested, the man receives an empty basket, hence the Luxembourgish expression "De Kuerf kréien" (to get a basket). In leap years, the tradition is reversed: women give a pretzel to their sweetheart, while men must choose between an egg and an empty basket.
