We've been told for decades: opening markets, signing agreements, facilitating trade – that's the key to progress. More trade, more growth, more prosperity. Really?

Behind major international treaties, such as the Mercosur agreement which we will examine, lies a more complex and often less glamorous reality. For while these agreements promise the moon and the stars, they also raise fundamental questions: who really wins? Under what conditions? And at what cost?

Can international trade be a lever for socio-economic development? Perhaps. But not without rules. Not without safeguards. Not without serious consideration of its social, environmental, and democratic impacts.

Today, criticisms are multiplying: leveling of social and environmental standards downwards, circumvention of national regulations, competition between workers and agricultural models, explosion of the carbon footprint linked to globalized trade, weakening of local economies.

And yet, negotiations continue. New agreements are taking shape with countries like India, Indonesia, and Australia. In Belgium, some are even trying to revive already contested agreements like CETA. Should we persist down this path? Or should we fundamentally rethink how we trade, produce, and cooperate?

During this CIEP News Tuesday, we will take the time to deconstruct the obvious by bringing together the perspectives of different stakeholders, in order to put the challenges of international trade into perspective.
