Lamentation, by Marzia Memoli (Martha Graham Dance Company)
Lamentation was created in New York on January 8, 1930 at Maxine Elliot's Theater, set to music by Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály. Performed almost entirely in a seated position, the piece presents a dancer enclosed in a violet jersey tube. The tensions and diagonals formed by her body against the fabric create a moving sculpture, a striking portrait of grief. Stripped of any human, animal, female or male identity, the figure becomes the very embodiment of sorrow.
