Born in 1973 in Bangkok, Thailand, Tawan Wattuya is best known for his unique approach to watercolor and the reflective themes he explores in his work. His choice of this medium is a deliberate way to convey the speed and dynamism he perceives in contemporary Thai society. Wattuya consciously observes his country from a distance, studying social and political situations from abroad to explore them more deeply. For his project at Nosbaum Reding gallery, Wattuya recreates and brings to life banknotes from around the world by painting them in large watercolor formats. While preserving the unique characteristics of each currency, he lets the fluid properties of watercolor create new images. The blurriness, ambiguity, and beauty of these transformed banknotes reflect changes in the contemporary world. Wattuya's banknote reproductions also highlight each country's distinct identity and invite reflection on the very notion of value.
