The construction of fort Thüngen dates back to 1732. In 1836, and again from 1859 to 1860, the fort was modernized and expanded. Today, fort Thüngen is the only detached fort still remaining in the area of the former Luxembourg fortress. While part of the above-ground structures is destroyed, almost all of the underground galleries remain intact.
