On the occasion of Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Metz, the Municipal Archives invite visitors to discover the historical ties between Metz and the Holy See since the 8th century. The exhibition brings together original archival documents, including papal bulls, plans, maps and photographs, as well as items from the Bibliothèques-Médiathèques de Metz. It traces the exchanges between Metz and the papacy, from councils and conclaves to jubilees and the visits of Leo IX in 1049 and John Paul II in 1988. It also highlights the municipal religious archives and the relations between the municipal authority and the Catholic, Protestant and Jewish faiths, from the French Revolution to the Second World War. The official visit of Leo XIV on 28 September 2026 forms part of this chronology.
