Beverly Buchanan. Impermanences
For the first presentation of her work in France, 49 Nord 6 Est is exhibiting the works of Beverly Buchanan (1940-2015) in dialogue with the artistic approach of Hélène Yamba-Guimbi (1995, France).
Born in North Carolina, Beverly Buchanan grounds her work in the popular culture of the southern United States where she grew up. She notably explores the history of slavery through monuments she inserts into the landscape at the edge of visibility, like stories untold. Her sculptures and drawings express her attachment to traditional popular constructions, which she reinterprets by revealing as much their vulnerability as the tenacity that enabled their existence.
In her pastel drawings as well as in her concrete or wooden sculptures, she reconstructs volumes, reveals or leaves in the shadows, reminding us that perception changes depending on the point of view.
Hélène Yamba-Guimbi, through occasional interventions in the exhibition spaces, invites visitors to consider the physical dimension of artistic work and to feel the tension between infrastructures and bodies. She questions, notably through sound, the notion of effort and something as subtle as breath.
The exhibition invites visitors to discover an artist who, beyond the formal power of the works, strives to convey the transitory nature of life, resonating with the sense of instability that permeates our time.
