A passion for Leipzig

Mixing transalpine influences and contrapuntal density, the motet Jesu meines Lebens Leben by Dietrich Buxtehude is a moving meditation on death, at times passionate and luminous. Considered in Germany as two of the best Early Music ensembles, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and Voces Suaves then revive The St. Mark Passion by Reinhard Keiser, which Bach himself conducted (and arranged) several times. A masterpiece of conciseness and drama, so much so that it was once attributed to Johann Sebastian himself! The famous Aus der Tiefen rufe ich, Herr, zu dir (one of the first, if not the very first cantata written by Bach) opens this exceptional program.
