Cimarron is the third part of a photographic project begun in 2010 by Charles Fréger and dedicated to masquerades. From the southern United States to Brazil, across fourteen countries, the artist compiles a non-exhaustive inventory of masquerades practised mainly by descendants of African slaves, celebrating the memory of their peers and their distinct cultures. Masks, make-up, costumes, adornments and accessories bring together African, Indigenous and colonial cultures.
